STRAUMANN’S CHARITY CYCLISTS ARE OFF!

Today’s the day 50 cyclists begin riding 500 miles across Italy, from Lake Garda to Rome, in the Straumann 500 mile Charity bike ride.

As they start their charity challenge we are delighted to feature Sarah Gilder who, so far is the highest fundraiser in this event. Here is a little insight into why she is taking part in the trip and raising money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation.

Sarah works as a hygienist at The Dental Surgery in the City of London. Here in her own words is why she is taking part in the event.

“I was encouraged by my colleagues who have previously taken part in the bi -annual Straumann charity bike ride to take the plunge this year! And a chance to raise funds for such a great charity – The Mouth Cancer Foundation.

I have cycled a fair amount over the last few years BUT this will be my biggest challenge and as always raising sponsorship can also be challenging. I had a flash thought during a spin class when training for the ride on how to gain sponsorship!

So I bought a map of Italy and outlined our route and placed on my surgery wall   - nearly every patient has asked “why the Italy map Sarah”?

This gave me the opportunity to discuss the event and more importantly mouth cancer.  I could explain why we check soft tissues during hygiene appointments. This has been an enormous benefit to my patients who now are much more informed and aware of the disease.

For some fun and to bring the patient into the challenge too, I asked all to write good luck messages on flags and pin them to the map in a favourite spot in Italy, these will all be placed into a draw after the ride and some lucky patients will win new electric toothbrushes!!

I think the involvement of my patients has really encouraged the generous donation’s I have received. NOW I got to do my bit of the bargain.  Here’s to 500 miles in 5 days!  Ciao”.

Fantastic idea! Good luck Sarah and thank you!  We are hugely grateful to all the cyclists taking part to raise money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation.  The riders have been busy raising sponsorship for their 5 day ride, but there is still time to show your support.   Simply visit  https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/displayCharityCampaignPage.action?charityCampaignUrl=www.straumannbikeride.com.
