The scheme has been designed to recognise dental practices that demonstrate a visible commitment to increasing public awareness of mouth cancer screening to all patients and to establish a documented referral pathway with a local specialist department.

The symposium, held as part of the Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme grant, will include presentations from national and international experts who will discuss the various clinical and public health responses to this emerging new cancer epidemic.

The Swallows Head & Neck Cancer Support, Head and Neck Social Group, HANDS (Dorset Cancer Care) and Ashford Laryngectomy Club, were selected from a high number of applications we received from support groups and projects across the UK that work with and support people affected by head and neck cancers.

The Irish Dentistry Awards have been created to recognise dental practices that go the extra mile in customer service, dental excellence and who constantly strive to provide the very best in dental care for their patients. We are delighted that we received an opportunity to attend such prestigious Awards and are grateful to everyone for their generous donations.  

Dr Lewis says ‘I am delighted to work with the Mouth Cancer Foundation and honoured they have elected me to join their distinguished group of Ambassadors. I can think of no activity more important for dental professionals than the early detection of mouth cancer and look forward to helping in any way I can to promote the aims of the Foundation.’

Proclaimed by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Cancer Day is celebrated annually on 4th February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.

They encouraged the public to grow beards for the entire month and get sponsored to do so. The campaign culminated with a “Facial Hair Face-Off” during which a participant sporting the most creative facial hair was awarded the “Crown of Manuary.”  All funds raised during the campaign will be used locally to develop future treatments for head and neck cancers.
