Today, a team from Queens Hospital in Romford, Essex and its Cancer Head Incorporating Neck Support Group, CHINS was announced as the top fundraiser for the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s 10KM Awareness Walk. The walk, which took place on Saturday, 22nd September 2012 in London’s Hyde Park, is designed to raise much needed awareness of mouth cancer which still remains a relatively unknown disease.

Team leader Karen Guner, her son, colleagues and support group members Aran Guner, Neil Shah, Nina Dowie, Pat Cross, Doreen Grant, Vicki East and Angela Fennell, who all live in the Barking Havering and Redbridge area, raised £1703.00 and won a 7-night stay at Blaemuir Holiday Cottage, Moray, Scotland courtesy of Leanne Smith.

The Mouth Cancer 10 KM Awareness Walk in 2012 has raised a staggering £40,000.00 in total.  The Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation Dr Vinod Joshi says “The Mouth Cancer 10KM Awareness Walk proved to be the most successful ever in 2012. The profit from the walk, after costs, will be ploughed into our latest initiative the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme which will launch in April this year. This is a brand new initiative which will accredit dental practices who actively prove they regularly carry out thorough head and neck cancer screenings and operate clearly documented referral pathways with a local specialist department.”

Karen’s team took part in the walk and supported the Mouth Cancer Foundation for all patients and family members who won or lost the long battle with mouth cancer. They also wanted to honour the memory of two members of the group, Terry Fennell and Paul Maeder, who recently passed away.

Karen says “The walk was an achievement to take part in even if we were one of the last to cross the line. I am very proud of everyone in my group for their determination. The atmosphere and the surrounding made it an enjoyable stroll in the park.”

The charity is indebted to all the fundraisers who came out to support the walk.  For more information about the walk, please visit www.mouthcancerwalk.org.
