“During Mouth Cancer Action Month the dental profession is encouraged to educate members of the public about mouth cancer.   A thorough head and neck cancer screening can be carried out by Dentists in just 2 minutes.  Throughout November the Mouth Cancer Foundation is urging all dentists to carry out this quick and simple life saving examination on all practice patients at routine examinations.”

Dr Vinod Joshi. Founder, the Mouth Cancer Foundation

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is urging dental practices across the UK to carry out a thorough head and neck cancer screening at all routine patient appointments during Mouth Cancer Action Month[i].

Dentists have a key role to play in the early detection of mouth cancer and in prevention of the disease by identifying those patients who are exposed to risk factors.  In the UK, nearly 8000 people are diagnosed with Mouth Cancer every year.

A quick, detailed examination takes around two minutes and can save lives, yet very few patients are aware they should receive this at least once a year.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation’s life saving initiative, the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme[ii] promotes the importance of checking for mouth cancer and raises awareness amongst both patients and dental practices.

Dr Joshi continues…”Make November 2013 the month to tell your patients about the importance of screening for mouth cancer.  If head and neck cancers are caught earlier, lives will be saved the costs on the NHS will reduce dramatically.  These cancers are particularly vicious and debilitating.  Patients who survive are a huge drain on medical resources for the rest of their lives, in terms of post operative and the psychological care required.  It makes sense for dentists to know what they are looking for and how to check and refer patients.”

Awareness is integral to achieving early detection of head and neck cancers, thus saving lives.  The Mouth Cancer Foundation will accredit dental practices that meet certain criteria and routinely participate in oral cancer screening.  Full membership includes access to a dedicated section of the charity website and FREE 1 hour CPD element as well as professional development and training modules suitable for all members of the practice team to ensure regular screening benefits practice patients.

The Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme is open to any dentist registered with the GDC or any dental practice whose clinicians are registered with The GDC.  For more information or to take part in the pilot scheme please contact the Mouth Cancer Foundation via or call +44 (0) 1924 950 950 for more information.
