Today, Patricia Cockwill, who works for the Terrace Dental Centre in Newmarket, Suffolk, was announced as the top fundraiser for the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s 10km Awareness Walk. The walk is designed to raise much needed awareness of mouth cancer, which continuous to affect more and more people every year. Statistics out earlier this month reveal that a record high 6200 new oral cancer cases were reported in 2011.
Patricia and her team members Sonal Patel, Maureen Manning, Sue Woodhall, Marianne Stainton, Charlotte Hubbard and Kerry Symons came together to make up the team ‘Terrace Dental’. They raised a staggering total of £1050.00 and won a paintballing day out from the world’s number one paintballing operator, Dental Force.
Patricia’s team decided to participate in the walk and support the Mouth Cancer Foundation, one of the UK’s leading mouth cancer charities, because after working in dentistry for many years they understand how important it is to educate and create awareness about this deadly disease. Patricia also has a firsthand experience of mouth cancer as her friend was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue 20 years ago. Luckily, the disease was detected early and her friend made a good recovery.
Patricia says “The Mouth Cancer Foundation’s 10 km Awareness Walk which took place on Saturday, 17th September 2011 in Hyde Park London is a fun event which raises the awareness of mouth cancer and also money to support the charity.”
The Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi says Patricia and her team ‘Terrace Dental’ recognize the need to make people aware of mouth cancer. The Awareness Walk helps bring the public, survivors, their families and health professionals together to stand strong in the fight against mouth cancer, Their dedication makes the Awareness Walk the great success it is, year on year.”
All money raised from the walk goes towards helping to improve the support for mouth cancer sufferers and their families, as well as highlighting the shocking facts about mouth cancer. For more information visit www.mouthcancerfoundation.org
