A cycling trio from Basildon, Essex is taking part in the London to Southend 52 Mile Bike Ride on Sunday, 21st July 2013 to raise much needed awareness and funds for the country’s leading mouth cancer charity, the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
Personal Assistant Louise Smith, 29, Healthcare Consultant Michael Smith, 30, and St Nicholas Church Treasurer John Kingsley, 66, have decided to take on a challenge and cycle for the Mouth Cancer Foundation in memory of Michael’s Dad, David.
David died in July 2010 shortly after being diagnosed with mouth cancer. Prior to the diagnosis, he suffered from a persistent cough and complained of a lump on the side of his mouth for months. However, as he did not want to worry his family, he did not get his symptoms checked out until the lump affected his tongue and ruptured. Once diagnosed, David’s family was advised he would need extensive chemotherapy and his tongue and voice box removed. Unfortunately David was not strong enough to proceed with treatment and passed away 6 days later at his home.
Louise says “David’s family will never forget how wonderful he was and how he always put his children first to a point he never truly told them how he was really feeling about the cancer. As he was unfortunately diagnosed with mouth cancer of which we knew little, we now want to help the Mouth Cancer Foundation educate the public about the symptoms of the disease and raise money to help with research.”
The Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi says “We are grateful to Louise, Michael and John for raising money for our charity. All funds will go towards helping improve the support for mouth cancer sufferers and their families, as well as highlighting the shocking facts about mouth cancer.”
