“I am far from being a natural athlete and with only 7 weeks to train, this triathlon was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It was tough, but not as challenging as the trauma and the treatment cancer suffers have to endure.”
Participant, Lisa Bexton
A dental therapist from Brixham, South Devon, has successfully swum, cycled and run around Torbay Leisure Centre Velopark to raise almost £400.00 and awareness for one of the country’s leading mouth cancer charities, the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
Lisa Bexton, 42, swam 400m, cycled 15k and ran 5k to support the charity after her uncle, Nigel Pace from Hereford, was diagnosed with the disease in February this year. Lisa says “My uncle was diagnosed with a lesion on his tongue. The lesion could not be detected by an intra-oral examination. Uncle Nigel has undergone aggressive chemotherapy sessions and 30 treatments of radiotherapy. He has seen a speech therapist and dietician. He is struggling to eat but has a feeding peg in his stomach and exists on supplements. This is certainly a very cruel disease.”
The Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi, says “25% of mouth cancer cases are not associated with any known risk factors, hence the need for vigilance. If you notice a lump in your mouth that wasn’t there before or a mouth ulcer which lasts for longer than 3 weeks, you should see your dentist immediately. The money raised from Lisa’s challenge will go towards helping improve the support for mouth cancer sufferers and their families, as well as highlighting the shocking facts about mouth cancer.”
