Today, the country’s leading Mouth Cancer Charity, the Mouth Cancer Foundation has announced Red House Dental Practice as a Full Member of its newly launched, potentially life-saving Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme*.

Dentists have a key role to play in the early detection of mouth cancer and in prevention of the disease by identifying those patients who are exposed to risk factors. In the UK, nearly 8000 people are diagnosed with Mouth Cancer every year.

Richard Marsden, who leads the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme, says “After seeing one of our patients going through assessment and treatment for oral cancer, we wanted to undertake further training to enable us to better identify the early signs of cancer. Through early detection and referral to our local Oral & Maxillofacial Department along with making patients aware of risk factors for mouth cancer, our aim is to minimise the number of future cases arising.”

The Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme promotes the importance of checking for mouth cancer and raises awareness amongst both patients and dental practices.

A quick, detailed examination takes around two minutes and can save lives, yet very few patients are aware they should receive it at least once a year.

Dr Vinod Joshi, Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation says “We are pleased to welcome Red House Dental Practice among Full Members of the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme. The scheme helps dentists and everyone working in a dental practice to know what they are looking for and how to check and refer patients. This will allow head and neck cancers to be caught earlier.  Head and neck cancers are particularly vicious and debilitating when detected late.  Patients who survive are a huge drain on medical resources for the rest of their lives, in terms of post operative and the psychological care required.  With earlier detection, lives are saved and costs on the NHS will reduce dramatically.”
