Vinod Joshi qualified as a dentist at the University of Singapore in 1974 and worked in Malaysia for 3 years before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue his postgraduate training at Leeds and the Eastman Dental Institute in London during which time he was awarded the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (Glasgow) and specialist accreditation in Restorative Dentistry in 1985. After working in Saudi Arabia for several years, he returned to the United Kingdom in July 1991 to work as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield and at St Luke’s Hospital, Bradford. Here, he set up and developed the Restorative Dentistry Oncology Clinics and contributed significantly to increasing awareness of mouth cancers and improving support for head and neck cancer patients. He also founded the Mouth Cancer Foundation, which provides support for mouth, throat and other head & neck cancer patients and promotes Mouth Cancer Awareness in the United Kingdom. He also has written several articles on the support head and neck cancer and on the need for dentists to be involved in early detection and the oral care of oncology patients. He has won several awards for his work.
He retired from the NHS in October 2011 to join the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur as a consultant. Here, he hopes to use his experience to improve the oral and dental care of people with mouth cancers and other disabilities. He remains dedicated to the Mouth Cancer Foundation and answers the daily queries posted at the MCF online support group’s message board. Vinod remains a trustee of the charity.
